Oh my goodness, I hear you on Millenials! I found the level of entitlement in this novel to be almost stupefying- especially from Julia. I’m sorry, special snowflake, that you’re not feeling self-actualized, but GET A JOB.

This was quick entertainment but not particularly nuanced. I did not buy the ending.

In reply to Resh Susan. I really like books with different POVs, too. In this one, I felt Julia did embody the more negative cliches about her generation, which made her difficult to like.

Great review. This is the first review I am reading of The Futures. It looks like a good debut indeed even though there are some cliches in plot. I like a book that has different POVs. Perhaps it is the cliche parts that made you dislike the characters? I am glad that inspite of that you wanted to know how the book ends

I like just the right type of unlikeable character, but Julia sounds like a character that would grate on me. I do love the setting though. I am a real fan of NYC settings, especially ones that are set in the 30’s to 60’s with older character. The Cosmopolitan’s is one such gem. This, being millennials as main characters could go either way with me. Thanks for your review. I may have to throw the dice on this one.

I was really looking forward to this book, now maybe a little less so! As a Millennial myself, I was hoping I could relate to the characters, but this book sounds a bit harsh – we’re not all that bad!

I agree with your take on Julia – she came across to me as annoying and entitled. But, I also remember feeling that same floundering feeling as I tried to find my footing after college…not really being able to figure out what career path was right for me, trying to translate college relationships (friendships and BFs) into the real world, etc.

All the comparison books you listed are basically this same story with a LOT better writing and more uniqueness, which was what I was hoping for (but didn’t get) from The Futures.
