I don’t know if this one will make it to my list, but I always enjoy novels that are set in far away locales that provide a glimpse into the cultural/social structure; sounds like it might fit the bill!

I really enjoyed reading your review! Excellent point about Sunam’s lack of backstory. The histories of Namin and Jisun were so interesting and I enjoyed learning about their families. After reading a few news articles, I get the impression that Sunam is supposed to a statement on culture/youth–but that wasn’t clear to me from the book. The women were definitely the stars of this one!

I wondered why the book opened with the focus on Sunam (and that other guy whose name I can’t remember)…I knew this was supposed to be a book about female friendship, but kept wondering where the females were. At least for the first 5%, which is when I put it down.
