I forgot that one! I loved it, but you’re right, the whole magical realism aspect might put people off. Gretel and the Dark was similar, but because I love magical realism it didn’t bother me.

Skeletons at the Feast is also my favorite Bohjalian book! I should have included Suite Francaise on this list. I worked off of book journals that I’ve kept for a long time, but Suite Fancaise was even before that and I forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me. I loved that book! I’ll need to check out the others.

Did you read No One is Here Except All of Us? It was another really different WWII story. I liked it so much, but wasn’t sure it would appeal to everyone.

A few I read recently that I thought were amazing: City of Women, Gretel and the Dark, The Undertaking, and Everyone Brave is Forgiven. Oh, and if you haven’t read Suite Francais that is in a class itself. The author ended up dying in a concentration camp.

I don’t know why I’ve never read Unbroken, but I need to!

I know what you mean about the topic seeming overdone, but honestly I keep learning new things form new books. For example, I knew nothing about Ravensbruk until Martha Hall Kelly’s book this year and it was definitely worth knowing about.

I loved Life After Life! It’s a really clever book.

LIfe after life it’s on my TBR because I saw it a couple of months ago and felt like I would enjoy it, but haven’t had the time to read it yet!!! Your recommendation has made me more excited!
