Great reviews! You nailed it on Well-Behaved. I wanted more of Alva in her later years- when she was really able to cut loose.

I liked Cloud less than you did, but for the same reasons- if that makes sense. I just don’t have the tolerance for novels of women being used by dreadful men and giving up their lives and all that.

“Between the social concerns that seem ridiculous today, the extreme snobbery, the upper-class obsessed press, and the clueless men I found myself laughing out loud over and over” – this is the stuff that made me just not care. I couldn’t get past how ridiculous it all was and couldn’t make myself care about whether the Vanderbilts achieved social supremacy or not. But, reading that quote back, it is kind of funny.
