Thanks for sharing your review and sorry for taking so long to stop by! I really enjoyed McNamara’s personal story in her book as well. It made the story feel a lot more immediate to me and I think it made it less of a let down that the serial killer story didn’t have more of a resolution.

I don’t know that I can think of any near-brushes with death, so even four seems like quite a lot to me!

Thx for the tip on reading the McNamara book over listening to it. I agree some books are just not easy listening to. I often find factual nonfiction books make better print reads than listens but that’s just me b/c I want to get all the info.

I had a slight advantage with I'll Be Gone in the Dark in that a grew up in Northern California and spent my college years and beyond in Southern California, so was very familiar with many of the areas where the killer operated. That made it easy to visualize the various locations.

I don’t think I could’ve listened to I’ll be Gone in the Dark for the reasons you mentioned. It was often hard to visually follow the structure of the piecing together parts so I would’ve struggled for sure listening. I’m interested in the Maggie O Farrell, I’ve never read her before

My hold on “I’ll Be Gone In the Dark” should come soon as it’s one I was able to put a pre-release hold on. Apparently my library allows holds as soon as they’ve ordered the book. And they order well in advance on titles that look like they’ll be popular. (And a lot — 50 copies of this book.) While San Francisco library allows this, most others around here don’t. I do love my library!

I have I Am on hold at the library and keep suspending it until I get through my Summer Reading Guide candidates. I’ve never read O’Farrell and really excited to give her a try!

And I can imagine how I’ll Be Gone was hard to follow on audio…I never would have been able to keep track and I never end up using those PDFs. Not convenient at all!
