I was thinking about reading The Mars Room but then The Post critic told me it was a “slog” which sent me running from it. Hmm. But your review sounds at least interesting about Romy’s life.

Yes on Mars Room — the beautifully written passages were not enough to make me love the book overall.

Hhhmmmm…I thought your rating of Mars Room would be lower, but now I feel as if I need to read this! At least to give it a try.

I agree about Alternate and am glad I dropped it before the second half. The whole yoga thing would have made me nutty. Her father dating was bad enough.

In reply to Jolissa Skow. Other people have loved Alternative Remedies, so don't put too much on my opinion. It just wasn't the book for me. You have a lot in common with Olivia, so you'll probably enjoy her story.

Oh I’m sad to hear about Alternative Remedies for Loss! I have this on my TBR list and really am still hoping to connect with it. I lost my own mom rather suddenly when I was 26. I also have two brothers – one had his own family, and one was newly married. Thank goodness my dad did no dating, but still, I threw myself into multiple things in grief and perhaps I’ll find that in common with the main character. I’ve seen a couple mixed reviews now, but I think I’ll still give it a try 🙂

Maybe this is why Alternative Remedies worked better for me: my best friend’s father in law started dating someone else months after losing his wife to cancer and MARRIED her on the 1st anniversary of his wife’s death. So, I know that stuff like that actually can happen. He’s now said he was out of his mind with grief and wasn’t thinking straight…
