The jacket cover and the first scene make one think it’s going to be about race and white privilege. But it’s not. The second half was more about revenge.

The characters were poorly developed, yet still unlikeable. I’m wondering how the author managed that.

Readable but ultimately about as satisfying as a bag of potato chips. 2 irritated stars.

I can see your point. Alix was definitely the most unlikeable character to me and she did seem like a hot mess for such an accomplished woman.

Your review has given me more perspective on it. Where it fell short for me was with Alix. I didn’t think she needed to be as dreadful (and kind of emotionally unhinged) as Reid wrote her. The impact was there, but then it went off the rails.

I finished this recently as well. It definitely kept me reading and I agree with you on how unlikeable many of the characters were, and I appreciated the subtlety of the race and class commentary. Aside from the viral video, this isn’t the type of stuff that makes the news but it’s what so many people have to deal with daily. I also really liked Emira’s relationship with Briar.
