There’s a twist is there not, that Turner used Elwood’s name later in life in NYC and those are the interspersed chapters. It’s crushing how the real Elwood was a bright kid with much potential — who thought he might stop the harm by writing the letter — but all he got was retribution. It’s a grim story but Whitehead had some very strong sentences & storytelling in it!
