In Quicksand, I agree that Maja had a lot of flaws, but I also thought her parents had really let her down. She wanted to be rescued from Sebastian for quite a while and I blame them for not seeing how deeply she was in over her head. I felt sorry for her.

I simply did not understand what was so horrible about her life that she needed to act the way she did. Her choices made no sense and lost me within 50 pages. I DNFed it.

I liked Quicksand, but maybe not as much as you and Sarah. Maja is a perfect example of me not needing to like a character to want to understand them. I thought she was quite flawed, but Giolito walked you through how/why everything happened as it did.
