I’m still wondering why this one was so powerful for me, but it was. I grew up without a father, so I think I’m always a bit soft when it comes to father-daughter stories.

Hawley is scary and should be so easy to dislike given his past, but man, can you imagine him as your husband or father? A man who can pretty much do it all and who is willing to risk all so you will be happy without suffocating you or demanding reciprocity? It is so difficult to find a man like that despicable. And Loo! Oh, I just wanted to hug and protect her, even though she would have just kicked me with her boots. So much to love in this story!
