The past week has been an interesting one, both difficult and uplifting in many ways. I’m proud of the women (and men) who were willing to take a stand and march. I envied the women who were able to do so with their daughters. I think the next four years are going to be a challenging, but amazing time in our nation’s history and I hope that we emerge whole and strong.
Last Week’s Read:
I finished The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker and am happy to report that it’s my favorite book so far this year! This story of a powerful friendship between two talented animators was far more than I had expected. I’ll be reviewing Whitaker’s wonderful debut next week.
Currently Reading:
I’ve just started Swimming Lessons by Claire Fuller, and it’s too soon to have much of a feel for it yet. I’m very hopeful though. Two of my 2017 goals were reading more nonfiction and listening to more audio books. I also had a list a couple of weeks ago of 2016 books I still wanted to get to. Well, with the audio version of When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi, I’ve tackled all three! I’m just over two hours in and really like it, as everyone told me I would. I’m starting to realize that I may end up at work in tears one day, but it will be worth it.
Likely to Read Next:
Next up, I’m going to the dark side! Desperation Road by Michael Farris Smith is a book I’m very much looking forward to reading. It’s been described as a gorgeous and violent story of troubled souls. Sounds like a perfecrt change of pace.

I’m about to start Swimming Lessons too…and also have Desperation Road coming up. Do we share a brain? Maybe…at least when we’re perusing the catalogs!
And I’m adding The Animators to my list!

Oh wow, I couldn’t imagine listening to the audio version of When Breath Becomes Air. I didn’t even make it past the prologue before tearing up! Happy reading!

I think it will be impossible to listen to When Breath Becomes Air without crying! Will be interested in your thoughts on Swimming Lessons.

YAY! I’m so glad to hear that you had such success with The Animators, Susie; I’m definitely going to add this one to my list! I loved, loved, loved When Breath Becomes Air; yes, I did experience some tearful moments, but it’s worth it. What a beautiful perspective. I, too, was overwhelmed with gratitude for Saturday’s activities; I marched in my city, but it was so great to see the larger events via friends messages, etc. Wow.

I’m not sure if listening to or reading When Breath Becomes Air will cause more crying! I haven’t managed it in any form yet.
Have a great week, Susie!
