A little rain, a little sunshine, temperatures falling, orange and yellow leaves just beginning to drop. Yup! It’s fall. I even broke out the boots last week and it all feels good. This all must mean that I’ve finally come through my mourning of the passing of summer. With the onset of October, I’m moving on and ready to enjoy this season. I even managed to get in quite a bit of reading time last week and that always feels good.
For the next couple Tuesdays I’ll be running a two part series called A Primer for Audiobook Enjoyment. I’m definitely not an expert, but I do listen to a lot of audiobooks over many different genres, so have developed some insights and tips that I’d like to share. Last Week’s Reads
- I finished Older Brother by Mahir Guven early last week. This book in translation about two Franco-Syrian brothers didn’t do much for me. I felt like the core of the story, the brothers and their relationship, worked, but there was just too much going on on the periphery. Mini-review at some point.
- It was emotional, and sometimes hard to hear, but I loved listening to The Only Plane In the Sky. I seriously want everyone I know to read/listen to this book. Garrett M. Graff did a wonderful job compiling first person interviews for this oral history of 9/11. I’ll be doing a full audiobook review on Thursday.
- Sadly, Holding On to Nothing by Elizabeth Chiles Shelburne also turned out to be a bit of a disappointment for me. While it was easy to read, nothing in this story of a young Tennessee couple trying to put together a family after an unplanned pregnancy surprised me. I could see everything coming. Mini-review later this month.
Currently Reading
- I had originally planned to listen to Wild Game by Adrienne Brodeur after it comes out on 10/15, but I felt like I was heading into a slump and wanted something to grab me. I had an ARC, so gave up on the waiting. I’m at the 60% mark right no and I like it, but I don’t think I’m as wowed by it as many others have reported. Perhaps the last 40% will change my mind on that.
- A couple weeks ago, I saw Chanel Miller on 60-Minutes and was impressed. She’s the woman who was sexually assaulted by the Stanford swimmer who got virtually no time for his crime. She stayed anonymous throughout the proceedings, but is now telling her own story in Know My Name. I’ve only listened to one chapter, but I think it’s going to be very good.

- Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout is back in this spot! This week I really AM going to get to her even though I’m very nervous about this follow up to Olive Kitteridge.

So I’m listening to Talking to Strangers right now and Malcolm Gladwell did an entire section on the Brock Turner case! Really interesting…maybe you should listening to this after you’re done with Know My Name!
Will I want t?. I don’t want to hear victim blaming. She’s already talked a lot a bout that and I’m only a couple hours in.
I just ordered a copy of The Only Plane in the Sky so I don’t have to wait for the library copy! Hopefully it shows up soon.

To echo Sarah’s comments… I read Talking to Strangers too was was really bothered by the Brock Turner section. It rubbed me the wrong way and got under my skin- I feel like I owe it to Chanel, now, to read her words!
I’m not far enough in to have much of an opinion on Know My Name, but Chanel was great on 60-Minutes.

I recently read and loved Fall and Rise on audio so want to read (listen) The Last Plane in the Sky to compare the two.
I love Olive so much. Her character resonates with me on so many levels and seeing the aging Olive’s introspection in Olive, Again was moving (to me). I realize she’s not everyone’s cup of tea but she’s mine. I do hope you enjoy!
I can see why The Only Plane In The Sky would be quite hard reading, but often those types of books are the ones that we should all read – moving & emotive.

Do you get your audiobooks via Audible or library or what? I stream most from the Library with OverDrive but my library doesn’t seem to have as many as I would like. Still I like listening. I think Olive, Again looks good but I will probably read that one.
