Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - 12 quotes about books that resonate with me.

Two year ago, when I first began thinking about what I’d want this blog to look like, one of the things I knew I wanted to include was some favorite book quotes. You see those on the right side of many pages on Novel Visits. At the time, I generated a HUGE list of bookish quotes that spoke to me. The ones I chose for the blog were favorites, but also ones that fit well into the spaces. There wasn’t nearly enough room to include all the quotes that resonated with me, so when I saw that today’s Top Ten Tuesday topic was “Favorite Book Quotes” I was thrilled. Finally! That Artsy Reader Girl has given me the opportunity to highlight more bookish quotes I love. Narrowing down the list was not easy, but here are twelve that i think will speak to most book lovers.

The obvious –

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "I cannot live without books." - Thomas Jefferson

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "The love of books is a love which requires neither justification, apology, nor defense." - J.A. Langford

If people are saying this about me, I don’t care!

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "She is too fond of books and it has turned her brain." - Louisa May Alcott

A little about the reality of a good book –

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "All good books have one thing in common - they are truer than if they had really happened." - Ernest Hemingway

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "Fiction reveals truths that reality obscures." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Books can change your life –

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "Books were my path to personal freedom." - Oprah Winfrey

The importance of books –

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. just get people to stop reading them." -Ray Bradbury

Speaking to my love of debuts –

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "A first book has some of the sweetness of a first love." Robert Aris Wilmott

Passing on book love –

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "You're never too old, too weak, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." - Dr. Seuss

Book hangovers –

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you lost a friend." -Paul Sweeny

Book lover problems –

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "I was born with a reading list I will never finish." -Maud Casey

Novel Visits: My Favorite Bookish Quotes - "So many books, so little time." -Frank Zappa

What are some of your favorite bookish quotes?

I’m waiting for it to happen for 4 or 5 books in a row. We deserve that. Right?

Love your quotes! One of my all-time favorites is also a Dr. Suess quote:

    “I know
    up on top
    you are seeing great sights
    but down here,
    on the bottom,
    we too,
    should have rights.”

Another is from A Gentleman in Moscow:

“Some years later, the Count would come to understand that he had been looking at the matter upside down. The pace of evolution was not something to be frightened by. For while nature doesn’t have a stake in whether the wings of a peppered moth are black or white, it genuinely hopes that the peppered moth will persist.”
