A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of listening to Tell Me More by Kelly Corrigan. In it, Corrigan weaves funny stories, touching moments, and heartbreaking losses into twelve “things we say to people we love, including ourselves, that make things better.” Through both laughter and tears, Tell Me More left me thinking, and feeling very thankful for the time I spent with Kelly Corrigan.

The Book

Publisher: Random House
Release Date: January 9, 2018
Length: 240 pages (4 hrs. 25 min.)
Amazon

Kelly Corrigan starts each chapter of Tell Me More with a word or phrase and highlights its meaning through the lessons life has taught her. Though these lessons are not necessarily profound, they are important, and in the rush of life, too often forgotten. A few that resonate most for me include:

TELL ME MORE – Here Kelly discovers the power of simply listening. It’s natural to want to help fix others’ problems, when many times all they’re really needing is a sympathetic ear. “Tell me more” lets others know you’re present and interested, as they work through their own issues….

Looking back at the books I’ve read in the last few months, I find myself in a weird sort of slump. I’ve read a lot of books in that time: 21 since August 1st. A couple (The Heart’s Invisible Furies, and Little Fires Everywhere) will even be in the running for my top ten of the year. Those alone truly wowed me. A few others were superior, but missing that “wow” factor. Some were just plain boring, but by far the majority were simply good. For me (and I suspect for many others), that’s just not good enough anymore! It’s beginning to feel like I’ve developed a new malady unique to bibliophiles. Let’s call it “The Booklover’s Curse,” whose symptoms include:…

I’m going to start by saying (with no shame) that I am a committed e-reader fan. I’ve been reading on a Kindle of one sort or another for six years. I resisted getting a Kindle for a long, long time. I’m a bookworm and bookworms read books! I wanted the heft of a book in my hand, the scent and texture of the paper. I loved trading books with friends. How could I give all that up? My two sons felt the need to weigh in and were constantly pushing me to make the move until finally, I took the leap.

From the first book I ever read on a Kindle, A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore, I was a convert. You might wonder why I was so easily seduced and that’s actually a really good question. There were just three things that made me fall for e-reading:…

I’m going to jump right in and state that as an avid reader I am a HUGE fan of quotation marks. This lovely little form of common punctuation has been in print since the sixteenth century and (in the unlikely event that any of you are from another planet) is defined by Webster’s as follows:
