Until I started blogging a few years ago, I’d never heard anyone talk about “auto-buy” authors, but the first time I heard the term, I knew exactly what it meant. For me, it’s an author that you’re so confident about that you can be onboard for reading his or her next book without even reading the synopsis. From the moment I heard the term I could also identify many favorite authors to whom that would apply. Today I’m sharing twelve authors whose fabulous writing has earned them a spot on my auto-buy list. This Top Ten Tuesday topic is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

Narrowing my list down to 12 was no easy task. To help, I required of myself that they had to be authors I’d read at least two books from and in most cases more. That eliminated all debut authors who have yet to produce a second novel. Many in that category I’ll eagerly snap up their next book. Some of the authors on this list have been there for years and others are relatively new. As we all know, favorite authors can wax and wane, so my list is a fluid one. (The list is in alphabetical order and nothing more.)…

As you may recall, last month I ran a Readers’ Preferences Survey that included nine questions about likes and dislikes when it comes to books and writing. Some of the questions gave options for answers, while others were completely open-ended. Your responses were truly amazing and with just under 100 of them, I’m I little overwhelmed! So, instead of sharing all the results at once, I’m breaking them up into two parts. Today, I’ll share your responses to the first five question, those with choices given. Then, sometime before the end of the year, I’ll take on the much more daunting task of sharing your very thoughtful responses to the four open-ended questions. Let’s get started!…

Recently, after finishing a book I both liked and didn’t, I thought to myself that I wished I could share a few thoughts with its author. From there, I moved on to other preferences I’d have liked authors to know about me and my reading tastes. Finally, it occurred to me, “Hey it’s not all about you!” Everyone who loves books and reads extensively develops opinions about writing styles, bookish tropes and so much more. So, please join in on my “Readers’ Preferences Survey.”

This is my first attempt at a survey and my fingers are crossed that I did it right! The 9 questions have rather large gaps between them (I have no idea why), so just keep scrolling down to get to the next one. My plan is for lots of you to respond, and then I’ll gather all your feedback and put together a post sharing the great information I get about readers’ preferences. Maybe, a few writers will even take note!…

Maybe you actually follow through with that vow. I, however, am rather hit or miss on reading all of a favorite author’s books and the reasons (or perhaps excuses?) are as varied as the authors themselves.

Since then, I’ve heard so many people rave about Kate Atkinson’s earlier detective novel, Case Histories, but still I’ve not picked it up. My excuse? I’m not a fan of most detective novels and the fact that Case Histories is also the first in a series makes me even more skeptical that I’d like it….

The ladies at The Broke and the Bookish picked a really fun theme for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, new-to-me authors I read for the first time in 2016. Most of the books I’ve read this year are by new-to-me authors, so this was a real challenge. I decided to rule out all debut novels. I’ll put those authors and their books in the spotlight very soon. That still left me with a lot of authors, so the weeding out process began. Below are the authors of ten novels that I was very impressed with, and that I’ll definitely be reading again!

Jennifer Close

I had my first introduction to Jennifer Close this past summer with her novel, The Hopefuls. I loved this fun look at a couple trying to navigate the world of ambition and competition for power in Washington DC. Jennifer has two previous novels that I may have passed over thinking that they were “beach reads.” I won’t be making that mistake again! (The Hopefuls review.)
