Last month, my sister, Lori, and I needed to make a six hour drive to pick up our mom. Lori enjoys listening to podcasts, but wanted to try an audiobook, so I checked around to see what books people were talking about. I saw The Night Swim everywhere. It seemed to be pretty universally praised, had a podcast in the storyline, and was a thriller, so not too heavy. Plus, it had dual timelines, which is something I almost always enjoy. Bingo! I’d found the book….

Every time we pick up a book the hope is that we’ll get lost in the story and be left with a book hangover. Those hangovers are tough because we’ve left behind a book we loved. Then there are the other sort hangovers: those you get because you pushed and pushed to finish a book you should have probably quit on, and you’re kicking yourself for wasting so much time. That’s the sort of hangover Dead to Her left me with, so let’s talk.

Novel Visits ~ Readers’ Preferences Survey | Musings

Recently, after finishing a book I both liked and didn’t, I thought to myself that I wished I could share a few thoughts with its author. From there, I moved on to other preferences I’d have liked authors to know about me and my reading tastes. Finally, it occurred to me, “Hey it’s not all about you!” Everyone who loves books and reads extensively develops opinions about writing styles, bookish tropes and so much more. So, please join in on my “Readers’ Preferences Survey.”

This is my first attempt at a survey and my fingers are crossed that I did it right! The 9 questions have rather large gaps between them (I have no idea why), so just keep scrolling down to get to the next one. My plan is for lots of you to respond, and then I’ll gather all your feedback and put together a post sharing the great information I get about readers’ preferences. Maybe, a few writers will even take note!…

I thought about jumping in on that one, but it felt like I was just doing another “best books of” list. Plus, I just couldn’t get a book that DIDN’T deserve the hype out of my mind: The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager. I must be missing something here because to me Sager’s second book was a complete disaster. I don’t get it! Let’s talk

Let’s Discuss: TELL ME MORE – Life Lessons from Kelly Corrigan, Me and You | Musings

A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of listening to Tell Me More by Kelly Corrigan. In it, Corrigan weaves funny stories, touching moments, and heartbreaking losses into twelve “things we say to people we love, including ourselves, that make things better.” Through both laughter and tears, Tell Me More left me thinking, and feeling very thankful for the time I spent with Kelly Corrigan.

Sometimes a book just screams to be discussed and Gabrielle Zevin’s new novel, Young Jane Young, is one such book. The much loved author of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry has people buzzing about some of the very different turns used in her latest book. Readers who had looked at the book’s description on Goodreads might have been better prepared for the oddities of this book, but those of us who perused Amazon or Algonquin Books got a close, but slightly less forthcoming description….
