Every year certain books get a lot of hype and that can be for various reasons. Most often it’s from the publishing industry, but sometimes it grows more organically from readers themselves. They hype can feel well deserved or it can feel like a whole lot of nothing. Undoubtedly, the opinions on hyped books vary from reader to reader. So today I’m sharing my opinions on Six 2022 Books That Deserved the Hype, Plus Six That Didn’t.

To be clear, my focus is on the hype around a book and not whether or not I liked it. Some of these choices you’ll see on my Best Books of 2022 list later this month, but others you won’t. I don’t need to love a book to appreciate its hype!…

Six 2021 Books That Deserved the Hype, Plus Six That Didn’t

Let’s talk hyped books. Every year certain books seem to get a lot of hype. Sometimes it starts well before the book publishes and other time it’s a major blitz at the time of publication. It starts with the publishers, but these days it often continues more organically with readers via social media. Hype can be a wonderful thing for some quieter books, or for new authors, but it can also be a bit of a curse. When a book gets a lot of hype, expectations from readers grow higher and higher, and sometimes a book that is actually very good feels like a disappointment because it wasn’t quite “that” good. Sadly, that was the case for several of the books on the second half of my list today. So, let’s take a look at the dozen books that for me both did and didn’t live up to their hype.

Hyped books! With so many out there every single year, all that hype can be a blessing or a curse. When a great book intersects with a boatload of hype, readers are happy and sales can soar. It’s a win, win! On the flip side, when pre-publication hype gets readers excited, anxious to dive into a book, and then it disappoints, it almost hurts. As a reader you might feel a little cheated having expected SO much and then the book not quite delivering. When you cross a book like this with a favorite author and it gets down right painful! Today, I’m sharing a dozen hyped books from 2020, half lived up to all that hype, and the other half didn’t quite do it for me.

Today over on That Artsy Reader Girl people will be linking up to a Top Ten Tuesday on books that lived up to the hype. I thought about jumping in on that one, but it felt like I was just doing another “best books of” list. Plus, I just couldn’t get a book that DIDN’T deserve the hype out of my mind: The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager. I must be missing something here because to me Sager’s second book was a complete disaster. I don’t get it! Let’s talk
