The last month has been a crazy time for me. First, I was spending a lot of time trying to get ready for the start of this online school year. Then, it actually began and my days have been so much longer than when we’re actually in school. Top that off with ten days of smoky/hazardous air quality where I couldn’t get outside for a walk, and my listening time has suffered! I know I’m not alone in feeling like easy listening is the way to go with audiobooks right now. I often prefer my audiobooks a little on the lighter side, but with COVID-19, quarantines, social distancing, and an uncertain future, right now they’re essential! The two places I most often listen to books are on my commute to work and on walks. The commute is now from my bedroom to my dining room, so that’s gone, but walks have become absolutely essential for maintaining my sanity. I try to get out for about an hour a day and most often I’m listening to an audiobook. It’s almost Valentine’s Day, so let’s talk romance! I’m not a person drawn to traditional romance novels. I don’t often want to read a book whose main focus is a love story. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve nothing against love stories being elements of a books, I just don’t want them to be the main focus. My kind of love stories need to be embedded in a much richer, bigger picture. I want the romance to be only one element of deeply layered story. I like it even more when the love is delivered in a completely unexpected or unconventional way. STOP! Ten Reasons for Me NOT to Read a Book | More

Last week on Top Ten Tuesday, the women at The Broke and the Bookish had us looking at everything that most appeals to us in books. It was fun looking at my Book Temptations Too Great to Resist. This week, the theme is reversed. It was actually easier for me to come up with what I don’t like in books than it was to pinpoint what I most like. Included in my list are some qualities you might expect, a couple that will be surprises, and at least one that is just plain weird! Of course, as with everything, there are exceptions. I’ll be taking a look at those, as well….
