I know I’m not alone in feeling like easy listening is the way to go with audiobooks right now. I often prefer my audiobooks a little on the lighter side, but with COVID-19, quarantines, social distancing, and an uncertain future, right now they’re essential! The two places I most often listen to books are on my commute to work and on walks. The commute is now from my bedroom to my dining room, so that’s gone, but walks have become absolutely essential for maintaining my sanity. I try to get out for about an hour a day and most often I’m listening to an audiobook. Today I’m sharing two on the lighter side that recently worked for me, The Happy Ever After Playlist and American Royals.…

It combined the real life of famed model/photographer Lee Miller with that of its main fictional character, Nora Tours. Much of the book took place in one of my very favorite, locales, Paris and it spanned a favorite era, the 1920’s through WWII. Plus, the story itself was excellent!…

Wow! It’s hard to believe that the end of December is already here and with it the end of 2017. Personally, I’ve had much happiness in the year, but still I’m happy to see 2017 come to an end. I read more books than I expected to in December, though many were 2018 releases, so will be reviewed later. If all goes according to plans, December will be the last wrap up in this format. Starting in January, I plan to make a few changes to provide a more useful monthly summary. I hope the holidays were good to you and that everyone is staying warm!

It was fun looking at my Book Temptations Too Great to Resist. This week, the theme is reversed. It was actually easier for me to come up with what I don’t like in books than it was to pinpoint what I most like. Included in my list are some qualities you might expect, a couple that will be surprises, and at least one that is just plain weird! Of course, as with everything, there are exceptions. I’ll be taking a look at those, as well….

So far in 2017, I’ve read two coming-of-age novels and wasn’t totally enamored with either of them. Yet, coming-of-age stories are one of my favorite genres. I love a well written story that highlights the growth of young people as they make that transition into adulthood. It’s something that all of us have experienced and can sympathize with. This week’s Top Ten Tuesday was a “freebie,” meaning any “super specific list you want to tackle.” I knew immediately that I wanted to cover some amazing coming-of-age novels. Many thanks to the women at The Broke and the Bookish for continuing their commitment to this fun weekly meme.

The story centers on 16-year old Emily, orphaned, homeless, and hiding her real identity, after the nuclear power plant where both her parents worked suffers a catastrophic meltdown. She is amazing!

At ten, she’s caught up in the crossfires of Yugoslavia’s civil war and must learn to survive at any cost. As a college student, now in America, she returns to her Croatian home to face the ghosts that have never stopped haunting her. In many different ways this is a stunning story of survival….
