<p>The theme for this week&#8217;s <strong>Top Ten Tuesday</strong>, hosted by <em><u><a href="http://www.brokeandbookish.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">The Broke and the Bookish</a></u></em>, is a great one and one that has me asking myself, &#8220;Why?&#8221; It&#8217;s <em>2016 Books I Meant to Read, but Didn&#8217;t Get To</em>. For me this list could have been much, much longer. I can never read anywhere near all the books that sound interesting to me. That can be frustrating, but it&#8217;s actually a good thing. Isn&#8217;t it wonderful that there are so many amazing writers out there? And, aren&#8217;t we lucky to have the &#8220;problem&#8221; of not being able to get to all their books? So, these are 10 of the 2016 books that I&#8217;m most hoping to read one day soon.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1432" src="https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2016-Books-I-Meant-to-Read.jpg" alt="2016 Books I Meant to Read - Ten outstanding books that I didn't read in 2016. <p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1503937828/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=novevisi-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=1503937828&amp;linkId=aa2ceb68ed98297a1747649d35b23e95" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em><strong>Fractured</strong></em></span></a> by Catherine McKenzie &#8211; I really enjoy a good psychological thriller now and then, but I have to be in the right mood for one. I had read a few earlier in the year and when <em>Fractured</em> came out last fall, I just wasn&#8217;t ready for another. It&#8217;s still high on my list for next time I am feeling like a thriller!&#8230;</p>

I read 19 debut novels in 2016 and considered 15 of them for this list. That&#8217;s a lot of wonderful new writing! It wasn&#8217;t easy, but I finally narrowed the list down to my 10 favorites. They&#8217;re listed in alphabetical order. Do I have a top pick out of all of these? I tried. Really, I did, but there is just too much great writing here! I loved each of these debuts for different reasons and look forward to reading many more novels by these ten new voices.</p>

<li>A villain you love to hate.</li>
<li>The story told in two times frames, meeting at the end.</li>

<p>The ladies at <em><u><a href="http://www.brokeandbookish.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">The Broke and the Bookish</a></u></em> picked a really fun theme for this week&#8217;s <strong>Top Ten Tuesday, </strong>new-to-me authors I read for the first time in 2016. Most of the books I&#8217;ve read this year are by new-to-me authors, so this was a real challenge. I decided to rule out all debut novels. I&#8217;ll put those authors and their books in the spotlight very soon. That still left me with a lot of authors, so the weeding out process began. Below are the authors of ten novels that I was very impressed with, and that I&#8217;ll definitely be reading again!</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1080" src="https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/New-to-Me-Authors.jpg" alt="New-to-Me Authors - A look at 10 authors never read before this year. These 10 wonderful writers all have prior novels, and a new release in 2016." width="550" height="550" srcset="https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/New-to-Me-Authors.jpg 1080w, https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/New-to-Me-Authors-150x150.jpg 150w, https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/New-to-Me-Authors-300x300.jpg 300w, https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/New-to-Me-Authors-680x680.jpg 680w, https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/New-to-Me-Authors-320x320.jpg 320w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px" /></p>
<h5><a href="http://jenniferclosebooks.com/about-the-author/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #333399;"><em><strong>Jennifer Close</strong></em></span></a><br />
<span style="color: #333399;"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-295" src="https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/The-Hopefuls-by-Jennifer-Close-201x300.jpg" alt="The Hopefuls by Jennifer Close" width="101" height="151" srcset="https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/The-Hopefuls-by-Jennifer-Close-201x300.jpg 201w, https://novelvisits.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/The-Hopefuls-by-Jennifer-Close.jpg 350w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 101px) 100vw, 101px" /></span></h5>
<p><span style="color: #333399;"><span style="color: #000000;">I had my first introduction to Jennifer Close this past summer with her novel, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1101875615/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=novevisi-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=1101875615&amp;linkId=9e0d9c3d207f6ea39e0e3ccd8e93a77e" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>The Hopefuls</em></span></a>. I loved this fun look at a couple trying to navigate the world of ambition and competition for power in Washington DC. Jennifer has two previous novels that I may have passed over thinking that they were &#8220;beach reads.&#8221; I won&#8217;t be making that mistake again! </span><em><span style="color: #000000;">(The Hopefuls <a href="https://novelvisits.com/hopefuls-jennifer-close-review/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">review</span></a>.</span>)<br />

<p>Today&#8217;s topic is <em><strong>&#8220;This is How We Read.&#8221; </strong></em>It&#8217;s just a little peek into a reader&#8217;s life.</p>
<p><strong>Number of books read this year: </strong>Goodreads and I disagree on this. They say 63, but my records show 65. Either way it&#8217;s fewer than I&#8217;d like. One huge lesson I&#8217;ve learned this year is that starting and maintaining a book blog really cuts into your reading time!&#8230;</p>
