2016 Books I Meant to Read, But Didn’t | Review

The theme for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, is a great one and one that has me asking myself, “Why?” It’s 2016 Books I Meant to Read, but Didn’t Get To. For me this list could have been much, much longer. I can never read anywhere near all the books that sound interesting to me. That can be frustrating, but it’s actually a good thing. Isn’t it wonderful that there are so many amazing writers out there? And, aren’t we lucky to have the “problem” of not being able to get to all their books? So, these are 10 of the 2016 books that I’m most hoping to read one day soon.

Fractured by Catherine McKenzie – I really enjoy a good psychological thriller now and then, but I have to be in the right mood for one. I had read a few earlier in the year and when Fractured came out last fall, I just wasn’t ready for another. It’s still high on my list for next time I am feeling like a thriller!…

Debut Novels: 2016 Favorites | Review

Three great blogs, Traveling with T, Estella’s Revenge, and GirlXOXO are hosting A Month of Favorites this holiday season. Today’s theme is “New to Me Authors.” I’m tweaking that to only include authors who were new to everyone this year with their debut novels. I read 19 debut novels in 2016 and considered 15 of them for this list. That’s a lot of wonderful new writing! It wasn’t easy, but I finally narrowed the list down to my 10 favorites. They’re listed in alphabetical order. Do I have a top pick out of all of these? I tried. Really, I did, but there is just too much great writing here! I loved each of these debuts for different reasons and look forward to reading many more novels by these ten new voices.

Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris
Three reasons I loved it:

A villain you love to hate.
The story told in two times frames, meeting at the end.
The narrator! (I listened to this one on an Audible.)

Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton
Three reasons I loved it:

The Arctic in a post-apocalyptic world.
An aging-scientist caring for an abandoned child.
Communication as a basic human need.

2016: Ten New-to-Me Authors | Review

The ladies at The Broke and the Bookish picked a really fun theme for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, new-to-me authors I read for the first time in 2016. Most of the books I’ve read this year are by new-to-me authors, so this was a real challenge. I decided to rule out all debut novels. I’ll put those authors and their books in the spotlight very soon. That still left me with a lot of authors, so the weeding out process began. Below are the authors of ten novels that I was very impressed with, and that I’ll definitely be reading again!

Jennifer Close

I had my first introduction to Jennifer Close this past summer with her novel, The Hopefuls. I loved this fun look at a couple trying to navigate the world of ambition and competition for power in Washington DC. Jennifer has two previous novels that I may have passed over thinking that they were “beach reads.” I won’t be making that mistake again! (The Hopefuls review.)

A Month of Favorites 2016: This is How I Read | More

Three great blogs, Traveling with T, Estella’s Revenge, and GirlXOXO are hosting A Month of Favorites this holiday season. Each day they set a theme or topic for book bloggers to contribute to. I’m going to try to participate in a few of these throughout the month starting with today!

Today’s topic is “This is How We Read.” It’s just a little peek into a reader’s life.

Number of books read this year: Goodreads and I disagree on this. They say 63, but my records show 65. Either way it’s fewer than I’d like. One huge lesson I’ve learned this year is that starting and maintaining a book blog really cuts into your reading time!…
