It’s been a great year for Nonfiction November. So many people have talked about so many different books that my list of nonfiction books to read has grown HUGE! I thought I was getting a little burnt out on nonfiction mid-month, planned to take a break, but instead dove right back into a couple more. I could share many more books, but have decided to limit it to twelve, so here we go!

Memoirs

I’m a big fan of memoirs and am excited to have these to look forward to. In fact, I’m so excited, I’ve already started one….

Be the Expert: Investigative Journalism | #NonfictionNovember

To begin with, don’t let the title fool you. I’m definitely not an expert on investigative journalism, but we’ll get back to that in a minute. First, we need to talk about how beautiful these four simple covers work together. The common red, white and black color schemes were pure coincidence and pure luck, but I love it!

Now, onto this week’s Nonfiction November theme hosted by Katie at Doing Dewey. The challenge was to “share 3 or more books on a single topic that you’ve read and can recommend (be the expert); you can put the call out for good nonfiction on a specific topic that you’ve been dying to read (ask the expert); or you can create your own list of books on a topic that you’d like to read (become the expert).” Throughout this year, I’ve become fascinated by the sometimes maddening process of investigative journalism and the tenacity of those who take on the challenge….

MY YEAR IN NONFICTION | #NonficNov

It’s that time of year when we celebrate nonfiction! For five weeks the hosts of Nonfiction November offer up a variety of different topics to shine some light on all the great nonfiction out there. This week’s host is Julie at Julz Reads, and the topic is “My Year in Nonfiction.” You can add your own nonfiction offerings by linking up on her site.

Before I get to this week’s specific questions, I want to share a few stats about my nonfiction reading this year. As of this writing, I’ve finished 97 books this year and 16 of those have been nonfiction, which is 16.5% of my reading. That’s up a tiny bit from last year, but way up from where I was a couple years ago (barely 10%). I think 15-18% is the sweet spot for me when it comes to nonfiction. Fiction will always be my first love, but I’ve come to crave great nonfiction reading, as well. So, let’s take a look at my year….

Like many other readers, I used to actively avoid nonfiction, but every once in a while, I’d slip one in. As a devoted fiction fan, I began to realize that I could enjoy nonfiction, especially when it read like fiction. So, today I’m excited to share six books in Nonfiction November’s challenge for the week, “Reads Like Fiction.” For this challenge, I turned to both older and newer nonfiction reads that I think make prefect choices for reluctant and/or budding nonfiction readers.

I don’t know about everyone else, but my nonfiction TBR list has exploded after just one week of Nonfiction November. I can only imagine what it will be like by the end of the month. And so It begins, Nonfiction November, a month dedicated to all things nonfiction. My nonfiction reading accounts for about 15% of the books I’ve read so far this year. That’s not huge, but is way up from only 4% a couple of years ago. Even better, with all the great nonfiction books I’ll discover this month, my overall percent will surely grow.

This week’s topic is “My Year in Nonfiction,” and each of the next few weeks will features a different nonfiction theme. Monday Update: My Week in Books 3/5/18 | More

Last week the weather in Washington was good for the soul. Very good! I needed sunglasses several days driving home from work and was able to take a couple of cool, but sunny, long walks. Best of all, on Saturday it was nice enough for me to sit out on my front porch and read for a couple of hours. I was bundled up, but the warmth from the sun felt amazing. Those walks and the uninterrupted reading time made for a very good start to my March reading.
