July has been a big month for many reasons. It’s my first month off school, though technically retirement doesn’t start until September 1, and I really don’t expect to actually “feel” retired for at least another month after that. There’s still a lot going on and maybe that’s the new normal, but I’m hoping not. A week and a half ago, we had buried my mom’s ashes next to her mother’s grave and later that same day had a wonderful party to celebrate her life. It felt good to honor her and to get past that. We still have about 15 tubs of her things to go through, but we’ll save that for a little later. Around all that, I managed to get quite a bit of reading done and am happily sharing six of my favorite books in my July 2021 Book Reviews.

Each of the six books covered in this post I read in print. I’ll share audiobooks in a separate post on Thursday, but for today you’re in for some special books, including one that just might end up being my best of the year!…

My last set of mini-reviews was less than a month ago, but somehow I’ve managed to acquire a stack of four novels in need of reviews. With so much focus on nonfiction this month, I didn’t want to let any of these books fall through the cracks. More than one gave me just the sort of reading respite I need in this crazy, busy fall season. I hope they might do the same for you.…

Thriller implies edge-of-your-seat, gasping-for-breath type suspense and that’s just not how either A Double Life or Our House played out. Entertaining? Twisty? Suspenseful? Mostly, but not quite thriller!…

Hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

I hope everyone had a beautiful Mother’s Day! Mine was quiet with a lot of reading time spent on the front porch. I was hit hard by a very tenacious flu last week which kept me out of school the entire week. The weekend was all about building up strength and really relaxing before finally heading back to work tomorrow. The saddest part of the whole flu bug has been that my 8-month old grandson caught it from me, and we’re all just crossing out fingers that his parents and 2-year old sister don’t get it. You’d think being home for a week, I’d have accomplished a lot of reading, but most of the time I found it hard to stay focused.

Last Week’s Reads

Reading of any sort was difficult the first few days last week, but once I started feeling just a bit better I found great distraction in listening to Other People’s Houses by Abbi Waxman. …
