Happy Labor Day to everyone! Labor Day might be my least favorite holiday for very selfish reasons. It marks the unofficial end summer, the season I most adore. I’m always a little sad to say goodbye to the lazy, easy, free days of summer and hello to fall’s return to structure and schedules. My reading pace will definitely be slowing down, so I’m hoping that many of the books I choose this fall will be as amazing as the book I finished last week!

August turned out to be a crazy, busy month for me. I spent a lot of time with family and friends which is always refreshing for my soul. Great books can also be a wonderful energizer for me, but this month they let me down a little. In July it seemed that I read too many just okay books and that trend carried on into August. To be clear, I read good books, some very good, but not enough “WOW” books in August. September, I’m counting on you!

Sometimes light reading is just the way to go, but a good story is still essential. I’m not generally a fan of chic lit, and yet, I quite thoroughly enjoyed two in a row. Listening on audio added a lot to both stories because the narrators were great. I’ve grown to derive so much pleasure from someone telling me a story. It almost makes me feel like a kid again. If you haven’t tried audio books, you might want to give one of these a shot!…

I hope you have all been enjoying the first week of August. It’s been very hot and smokey here in the Northwest. The smoke from fires in British Columbia have blanketed the Seattle area, making for gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, but also for extremely poor air quality. Hopefully things will improve this week. I missed some of the heat at home only to absolutely cook in Scottsdale, AZ where I was much of last week visiting my sister. It was a great trip with lots of good food, great wine, and excellent company!

Happy 4th of July! I hope many of you are enjoying an extra long weekend, or even better the entire week off. In my neck of the woods the weather has been lovely, and I’ve been busy trying to get things checked off my summer “to do” list. This list involves a lot of mundane things that I never seem to be able to get to during the school year. (Like cleaning out my closets and deciding on a new refrigerator.) Of all I was able to get done last week, the best was hanging my new hammock chair on the front porch. Amazing! It’s easier to get in and out of than a regular hammock, doesn’t take up as much space, and holds you almost like a baby. I’ll be spending a lot of time in it all summer long.

Last Week’s Reads

I started reading Who is Rich by Matthew Klam last week, but gave up on it at about 23%. The story just wasn’t grabbing me. I then moved onto Goodbye Vitamin, Rachel Khong’s debut. …

Thanks to a small injury to my right hip, I’ve been banned from all exercise for the next two weeks. (In fact, I’ve been limited to a few mild stretches.) While this is extremely annoying, it has provided me with some additional reading time! I’ve used that time wisely, completing three books in a week for the first time in a very long time. All three kept me interested, but one? FANTASTIC!

June! You’ve got to love June as it ushers in summer for us. While my heart and mind are already on summer vacation, my body still keeps driving to work, where I then have to make that awkward transition back to reality. Twelve more days. It was fun this last week seeing so many pictures and posts from BEA. What a fun experience. I hope to make it there one of these years. Meanwhile, here at home, I’m itching to find my next great read.
