September was a bit of a weird reading month. I read/listened to quite a few books and enjoyed many of them. However, none left me with that big book hangover that we’re always hoping for. Off and on I felt like I was on the verge of a slump, but then I’d land on a really good book that pulled me through. So, today I’m sharing the books I consider to be my six favorites from September.

As you’ll see in the reviews this is a wide range of books, including a memoir, a couple debuts, favorite authors, and more. I hope you find a book or two that piques your interest!…

For an entire month this summer, including the first three weeks of August, I was lucky enough to be away from home spending time with family. This gave me the much needed break from living alone all spring and facing a fall of teaching online once again. I did work a few days during that time, but mostly enjoyed more conversations, more great food, and much more wine than usual. Of course, I also managed to squeeze in some great reading, that I’m excited to be sharing with you today. I suspect one of these books may end up on my Best Books of 2020 list come December!…

I don’t know about you, but often times I tend to avoid really long books because I feel like I just don’t have the time. Well right now, we have time. A lot of time! Thanks to the coronavirus and long quarantines this just might be the perfect time to take on a really long book that you’ve always wanted to read. I originally shared this post back in the fall of 2018, but thought now would be the perfect time to bring it back. Don’t let the title fool you. I actually talk about 15 different long books I’ve loved! I hope one of these wonderful books might help fill your days. (And, since none of these are new releases, you should be able to get electronic copies through Libby, Overdrive or your local library’s system!)

In putting together my list of LONG BOOKS (500+ pages) I chose to feature books that I haven’t talked about much in earlier posts. …

Where would any of us book lovers be without the many gifted authors doing the hard work to create brilliant stories they’re willing to share with the world? I envy their talent and appreciate their efforts. Today I’m highlighting ten new-to-me authors who simply wowed me with their words last year. This list includes no debut authors because, let’s face it, they’re new to all of us! In case you missed it, I shared My Favorite Debuts of 2019 back in December, so today I’m featuring established authors I first had the pleasure of reading in 2019.

When looking at new-to-me authors from 2019, I decided to limit it to fiction since I devoted quite a bit of time last fall to nonfiction books from 2019. From the fiction authors, one clearly moved to the top of the heap and I think I’ll save that author for last. The rest of the best, I’m covering strictly in alphabetical order….

Until I started blogging a few years ago, I’d never heard anyone talk about “auto-buy” authors, but the first time I heard the term, I knew exactly what it meant. For me, it’s an author that you’re so confident about that you can be onboard for reading his or her next book without even reading the synopsis. From the moment I heard the term I could also identify many favorite authors to whom that would apply. Today I’m sharing twelve authors whose fabulous writing has earned them a spot on my auto-buy list. This Top Ten Tuesday topic is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

Narrowing my list down to 12 was no easy task. To help, I required of myself that they had to be authors I’d read at least two books from and in most cases more. That eliminated all debut authors who have yet to produce a second novel. Many in that category I’ll eagerly snap up their next book. Some of the authors on this list have been there for years and others are relatively new. As we all know, favorite authors can wax and wane, so my list is a fluid one. (The list is in alphabetical order and nothing more.)…

With Memorial Day weekend about to begin, we mark the unofficial start of summer. What could be better than that? Whether your summer plans involve a trip abroad, a family reunion, long weekends at a camp ground, road trips, or just enjoying the comfort of your own front porch, I hope the pleasure of great beach bag books will be part of your summer fun.

Today, I’m happy to be sharing 20 books to tuck into your beach bag, backpack, purse or pocket. The first 15 books are all from 2019 and I’ve divided those into three categories that I hope will have something perfect for everyone. The final 5 books are all older books that have been among my very favorites from summers gone by. Happy reading!…

Thank goodness for authors! Where would we readers be without their tireless efforts and stunning creativity? Every time I read an amazing book, I wish I could personally thank the author and fangirl all over him or her. Instead, today I’m joining this week’s Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl) in celebrating new-to-me authors from 2018. Back in December, I shared ten new-to-everyone authors in my DEBUTS – My Favorites of 2018, so today I’m focusing on established writers that I had the pleasure of reading for the first time last year.

When looking at new-to-me authors I wanted to highlight, they fell into three categories: those I liked so much I read more than one of their books, writers I’m eager to read more from, but have not yet done, and (for a little added fun) a couple of wildly popular authors who completely turned me off!…

You know how it is with favorite authors. You read a book you’re completely wowed by and you immediately plan to go back and read everything that author EVER wrote. Well, maybe you’re more disciplined than I am. Maybe you actually follow through with that vow. I, however, am rather hit or miss on reading all of a favorite author’s books and the reasons (or perhaps excuses?) are as varied as the authors themselves.

Kate Atkinson

Since then, I’ve heard so many people rave about Kate Atkinson’s earlier detective novel, Case Histories, but still I’ve not picked it up. My excuse? I’m not a fan of most detective novels and the fact that Case Histories is also the first in a series makes me even more skeptical that I’d like it….
